The Children’s Book Choice

The Children’s Book Choice is a nationwide reading initiative in Sweden where children and young people are invited to vote for their favorite books of the year. By placing children’s voices at the center, the initiative empowers young readers to engage with literature on their own terms—and to discover the value of their own reading experiences.

Each year, children across the country read, reflect, and vote for the books that have meant the most to them. The initiative is open to different age groups—typically 6–9, 9–12, and 12–16—ensuring that a wide range of perspectives and reading journeys are represented. Voting can take place individually or collectively through schools and libraries, often as part of a shared reading experience.

More than a vote, The Children’s Book Choice is a celebration of reading as an active and meaningful part of children’s lives. It encourages curiosity, strengthens reading motivation, and creates space for discussion, reflection, and discovery.

The winners are announced at a public ceremony, where the results reflect the collective voice of thousands of young readers. Alongside celebrating authors and books, the initiative also highlights the important role of teachers, librarians, and schools in fostering a strong reading culture.

At its core, The Children’s Book Choice is about giving children a voice—not only in what they read, but in shaping the future of reading itself.
